Childcare: Reimagined
The Coop, a childcare co-op, brings low-income families together to share caregiving, resources, and support through a collaborative community model.
Challenge
Access to affordable, high-quality childcare remains a significant barrier for many families, particularly those with low incomes. Limited availability, high costs, and long waitlists make it difficult for parents and caregivers to find reliable care for children ages 0–5. At the same time, many aspiring and retired educators have valuable experience but lack accessible opportunities to apply their skills in flexible, community-based settings.
Solution
The Coop Childcare Co-op is a community-driven model that transforms local spaces, such as libraries and recreation centers, into accessible childcare hubs for young children. Developed through a collaborative process with fellow designers Kevin McGurn, Jamie Morris, Kathryn Sedlak, and Fe Kligerman, The Coop focuses on supporting low-income families while creating training and income opportunities for aspiring and retired educators. By tailoring each location to the needs of its neighborhood, The Coop strengthens community connections and maximizes existing public resources to create sustainable, high-quality childcare solutions.
